In 1987, Genesis sold out Wembley Stadium four nights in a row. They were at their peak. After a brief hiatus for solo work, they returned in 1991.

In 1996, Phil Collins left Genesis. Touring members Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer also left. Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford decided to carry on. They settled on singer Ray Wilson to replace Collins.

The new Genesis did well in Europe, but fell flat without Collins in America. Banks and Rutherford fired Wilson and Genesis went on hiatus until 2006 when Collins rejoined. Originally, they hoped to reunite with Gabriel and Hackett as well, but plans fell through. Genesis went on tour once more as a three piece.

In 2007, VH-1 honored Genesis with their Rock Honors.

Since the reunion tour, Genesis has gone into hiatus. There has been speculation about their return ever since with band members vacillating back and forth.

In 2014, Peter Gabriel was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo performer.

Genesis was down to three members, so they released the album ...And Then There Were Three...

The album produced one of their most important songs. It attracted female fans and signaled the transition to a more pop orientation.

Genesis: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2010 (part 1)

1967-77

Rock Hall Bio: http://rockhall.com/inductees/genesis/

Official Site: http://genesis.m3w.com/main.html

Genesis formed in 1967 by Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford. Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart rounded out the lineup. They signed a contract in 1968 with Decca and dubbed themselves "Genesis." This caused some confusion as record stores placed their albums with Christian Music as opposed to Prog Rock. By the time they recorded their first album, they switched drummers with John Silver replacing Chris Stewart.

The Silent Sun (1968): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp4b4tcZ7Rc

Another drummer change…John Mayhew replaced John Silver. Gabriel tried to attract attention by wearing bizarre costumes during their live performances. His efforts paid off. People noticed.

The Knife (Part 1) (1971): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z3EJNgjBmo

By this point, they had developed a cult following. Anthony Phillips developed stage fright and left the band. He was replaced by Mick Barnard and then finally Steve Hackett. At the same time, Phil Collins replaced Mayhew on drums.

Supper’s Ready (1972): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M58wE8GTGp4

Steve Hackett pioneered the tapping technique Eddie Van Halen made popular and sweep-picking that became a fad in the 80s.

Dancing with the Moonlight Knight (1973): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdD6L4cKKU8

Genesis released the classic The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in 1974.

The Carpet Crawlers (1975): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtzgBJ13vro

Peter Gabriel then left the band to embark on a solo career. Phil Collins became the lead singer after Genesis auditioned over 400 singers. This led Chester Thompson to join the live act to handle drum duties to free up Collins.

Match of the Day (1977): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYk_uNA395M

Meanwhile, Hackett decided to leave Genesis leaving Banks, Rutherford, and Collins to plod on.

David Geffen: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2010

Rock Hall Bio: http://rockhall.com/inductees/david-geffen/bio/

David Geffen formed Asylum Records in 1970, Geffen Records in 1980, and DGC Records in 1990. In 1994, he helped cofound Dreamworks.

Geffen founded his own label in 1970 because he could not find a deal for Jackson Browne. He chose the name Asylum because he signed artists that could not find a deal elsewhere. Asylum signed The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Browne, and others.

He retired in 1977 after receiving a cancer diagnosis. The diagnosis proved false and he formed Geffen in 1980. He scored a coup by signing John Lennon. The new label boasted Olivia Newton-John, Guns n Roses, The Stone Roses, Neil Young, Elton John, Sonic Youth, Aerosmith, and others. He left the label, which changed its name to DGC, in 1995.
