Metallica: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2009 part 3

2001-present

In 2001, Jason Newsted left Metallica. He was replaced with Robert Trujillo. The Newsted departure and other internal problems appeared in the documentary Some Kind of Monster.

It appeared Metallica might fold, but they released their eighth album in 2003. St Anger hit #1 on the Billboard charts.

The Velvet Underground: Sweet Jane (1970)

"Sweet Jane" has Velvet Underground versions with minor differences. The first came in 1970 and one with a bridge, which covered the original lyrics originally scrapped in 1969. The song is considered one of the all-time great works in rock history. The Cowboy Junkies recorded the most famous cover while Lou Reed joined Metallica to perform the song at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary show.

Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed (1972)

Lou Reed died on October 26, 2013 from complications brought on by a liver transplant. Reed was a genius that brought a gritty street reality to music. "Walk on the Wild Side" is his signature song and encompasses Reed's style. He pushed the boundaries with topics including drugs, transsexuality, and male prostitution. It is amazing the song became a radio favorite because Reed does not try to use innuendo. He is upfront with his topics. Rest in peace Lou!

Lou Reed played in a few garage bands. He met John Cale and they eventually formed the group. The band’s subject material covered drugs, transsexuals, and other taboo topics.

Dion and the Belmonts played on the Winter Dance Party tour in 1959. Dion could not afford the $36 needed to fly and stuck with the bus. The plane, carrying Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, crashed killing the three.

Lou Reed experienced the loss of two friends and dealt with his grief by creating the concept album Magic and Loss. Reed always examined the dark side of life, but the cancer deaths of his friends brought forth a new creative outlet. Instead of drug abuse, street life, and sex, Reed examined mortality in his own way.

910. I'm Waiting for the Man by the Velvet Underground (1967)

"I'm waiting for my man, $26 in my hand." During an age of peace, love, and politics, the Velvet Underground went in a different direction. Many of their songs involved the dirty side of drug use. In this piece, the main character is going downtown to score some heroin. There is even a minor confrontation with a black character denoting the schism between suburban whites and urban blacks. There is nothing glamorous or exciting about the drug culture here. Instead, this is an honest look at a junkie coming to get his fix for the day.
