Carl Perkins: Matchbox (1957)

"Matchbox" was first recorded in 1924 by Ma Rainey. Carl Perkins reworked it 30 years later and turned it into song about a poor boy with no prospects. On the day he recorded this, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash wandered in and formed the Million Dollar Quartet with Perkins.

Elvis Presley had another monster year. He scored three #1 hits, bought Graceland, and made his last Ed Sullivan appearance. At the same time, Jerry Lee Lewis released two songs that made him immortal. At the same time, Ricky Nelson, Bo Diddley, and the Everly Brothers record iconic tracks. Meanwhile, John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the first time and Simon and Garfunkel unite as Tom and Jerry.

“Rock n Roll Music” is one of the all-time great songs written by one of the greats. It hit #6 on the Billboard’s R&B chart and #8 on the Hot 100 in 1957. It has been covered by a number of artists, most notably the Beatles.

Buddy Holly: Maybe Baby (1957)

Just a great song by the incomparable Buddy Holly. His influence on the British Invasion can not be understated. The Beatles took their name as an homage to The Crickets and the invasion acts all cited Holly as an influence.

Buddy Holly: That'll Be The Day (1957)

Buddy Holly titled this hit on a line from The Searchers. The band went to the movies to see the film and John Wayne uttered the line frequently inspiring Holly. On a side note, Holly was under contract with Decca and tried to avoid his label by crediting the song to "The Crickets." In a strange twist, Holly ended up with two recording contracts.

980. Bye Bye Love by the Everly Brothers (1957)

Although considered a rock classic, the Everly Brothers hit #1 on the Country charts with Bye Bye Love in 1957. George Harrison recorded an interesting cover that included Eric Clapton and Patti Boyd on backing vocals. Boyd divorced Harrison and left him for Clapton. For me, it's interesting that such an up tempo song could have such depressing lyrics.
