Robert Plant: Heaven Knows (1988)

Robert Plant scored his second #1 rock hit in 1988 with “Heaven Knows.” The song was the first single off the successful Now and Zen album. Plant’s previous #1 hits included “Other Arms” in 1983 and “Little by Little” in 1985. He also hit #1 with “Tall Cool One” in 1988 and “Hurting Kind” in 1990.

Led Zeppelin formed out of the Yardbirds’ ashes. In fact, they formed as the “New Yardbirds” in 1968. They helped pioneer the next phase of album oriented rock that dominated the early seventies. Zeppelin began as a blues-oriented rock band and expanded to other forms such as folk and even medieval music. The band explored many themes including mythology and history to go along with the usual rock topics.

Led Zeppelin: Kashmir (1975)

Zeppelin began writing "Kashmir" in 1973 and finally recorded it the following year. The band considered the song one of their greatest musical achievements. Robert Plant was traveling through Southern Morocco when the lyrics came to him. The song is complex creating special challenges for the lyricist:

"Because of the time signature, the whole deal of the song is… not grandiose, but powerful: it required some kind of epithet, or abstract lyrical setting about the whole idea of life being an adventure and being a series of illuminated moments. But everything is not what you see. It was quite a task, ’cause I couldn’t sing it. It was like the song was bigger than me. It’s true: I was petrified, it’s true. It was painful; I was virtually in tears.^"

Hip Hop is known for sampling other people's music. In fact, it became a major source of controversy in the late eighties and early nineties. Interestingtly, Robert Plant decided to sample himself in 1988. "Tall Cool One" contains several Led Zeppelin samples.
