Led Zeppelin: Travelin' Riverside Blues (1990)

Led Zeppelin covered this old Robert Johnson classic in 1969. However, the band did not release the song as a single until 1990 with the boxset compilation. Zeppelin's version is not a straight cover. Rather, it is more of a tribute.

Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young: Woodstock (1970)

Joni Mitchell wrote "Woodstock" based on Graham Nash's descriptions of the event. Mitchell's version came out in 1969 while Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young released a version in 1970. Later, Led Zeppelin incorporated part of the song into their live version of "Dazed and Confused."

Stone Temple Pilots: Sex Type Thing (1992)

The Stone Temple Pilots incorporated KISS’ “War Machine” and Led Zeppelin’s “In the Light” together to create an anti-rape song. Despite the song title and full blown testosterone, Weiland says the song is based on a real life incident in which a girl he dated was raped by three men after a party. The song created controversy for a time. Critics misunderstood the lyrics as misogynist leading to some protests.

Led Zeppelin formed out of the Yardbirds’ ashes. In fact, they formed as the “New Yardbirds” in 1968. They helped pioneer the next phase of album oriented rock that dominated the early seventies. Zeppelin began as a blues-oriented rock band and expanded to other forms such as folk and even medieval music. The band explored many themes including mythology and history to go along with the usual rock topics.

Bruce and Baker could not get along. On top of this, Clapton fell in love with The Band and took some negative reviews about his playing to heart. The band had to be convinced to produce one final work.

Goodbye

Ringo Starr misread “bridge” while Clapton worked on this song. He called it “Badge” and the name stuck.

In 1968, Jim McCarthy and Kevin Relf left the band. Page mutated the band’s remnants into Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin: Kashmir (1975)

Zeppelin began writing "Kashmir" in 1973 and finally recorded it the following year. The band considered the song one of their greatest musical achievements. Robert Plant was traveling through Southern Morocco when the lyrics came to him. The song is complex creating special challenges for the lyricist:

"Because of the time signature, the whole deal of the song is… not grandiose, but powerful: it required some kind of epithet, or abstract lyrical setting about the whole idea of life being an adventure and being a series of illuminated moments. But everything is not what you see. It was quite a task, ’cause I couldn’t sing it. It was like the song was bigger than me. It’s true: I was petrified, it’s true. It was painful; I was virtually in tears.^"

892. Beck's Bolero by Jeff Beck (1967)

Jeff Beck gathered his friends Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Nicky Hopkins, and Keith Moon together to record his own bolero. The group considered recording an entire album, but never got around to it.  The song is presented in three parts and contains perhaps the first heavy metal riff. Listen for a scream about halfway through. Moon kicked over his microphone...
