"Gone Away" is another song suitable for Batman. Imagine Bruce Wayne at his parent's gravesite. The song was written after lead singer Dexter Holland's girlfriend died in a car accident. The somber nature of the song was a departure for a band noted for its offbeat music.

Foo Fighters: Monkey Wrench (1997)

Monkey Wrench is about Dave Grohl’s marriage to Jennifer Youngblood. The song is up tempo while the lyrics do not pull any punches. Apparently, she was not very nice. I do love the elevator music at the beginning of the video.

U2: Wake Up Dead Man (1997)

Bands in the 90s revolted against their 80s predecessors by focusing on dark themes. Instead of partying, they dealt in somber tones. U2 bridged the gap between generations and survived. In 1997, they released their Pop album, which incorporated irony with electronica. The final track, “Wake Up Dead Man” embraces the early 90s darkness at a time music began to lighten up again.

"Gone" is about guilt that U2 felt by becoming so rich doing "so little." It encompasses the inner conflict between artist and humanist. During the PopMart Tour, the band dedicated the song to Michael Hutchence of INXS, whom apparently shared this feeling.

Keith Richards put his new record on and his daughter starting singing "Constant Craving" over it. At that moment, he realized the similarity and the Stones gave KD Lang writing credit. In addition, the band samples Biz Markie. The video included Angelina Jolie as a stripper.

Marcy Playground: Sex and Candy (1997)

"Sex and Candy" is a clever laid back alt rock song from the post grunge era. Also, it was a fun night club song for a time. The title derives from John Wozniak's college days. His roomate apparently ushered the line one night and Wozniak ran with it.

"Trust" is about a relationship that failed over trust issues. The song was nominated for a Grammy and a Spanish version was released for Latin America. The video received extension MTV airplay before Music Television stopped playing music.

"Brian Wilson" is about a man whose life course is similar to Beach Boy Brian Wilson's. Wilson suffered a breakdown trying to compete with the Beatles and spent three years secluded in his bedroom. Originally released in 1992, the band re-released the song in 1997. Brian Wilson himself later covered the song.

Rock n Roll enjoyed one last gasp in the late nineties courtesy Britpop bands like Blur. This energetic stadium anthem is their most famous composition. They called it "Song 2" after writing it because they could not agree on a title. Blur simply stuck with "Song 2" for the title. It sounds almost as if Homer Simpson helped write it...
