GnR formed in 1985. After solidifying the lineup, they played the club scene where they got noticed. They released the EP Live Like a Suicide in 1986. In 1987, they conquered with Appetite for Destruction.

They displayed a "hedonistic rebelliousness" missing in rock at the time. GnR is credited with reviving rock n roll in the hair metal era and appeared in Clint Eastwood’s The Dead Pool. MTV and radio did not want to play GnR, but fans kept requesting and demanding it.

Axl Rose kicked Steven Adler out of the band for drug use in 1990. Matt Sorum replaced Adler and they added Dizzy Reed for keyboards.

They released Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 in 1991. In short order, GnR became the biggest band in the universe, provided a song for Terminator 2, and riots quickly followed.

2001-present

In 2001, Jason Newsted left Metallica. He was replaced with Robert Trujillo. The Newsted departure and other internal problems appeared in the documentary Some Kind of Monster.

In 2000, the band discovered one of their demos had been leaked online. They discovered online file sharing and filed suit against Napster for copyright infringement. Digital downloads spelled the beginning of the end of the music industry. The battle cost the band some fans. However, they were right in the long run.

1981-1990

Lars Ulrich formed Metallica in 1981. James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner answered Lars' ad and Metallica formed. Dave Mustaine joined shortly thereafter. They released a song on the now legendary Metal Massacre I album. The song created buzz, they did a demo, and they were on the way. Tanner would be gone long before Metallica hit the big time. Cliff Burton joined the band in 1982.The following year, they released their first album. However, they kicked Mustaine out of the band for drug abuse and hired Kirk Hammett. Mustaine later formed Megadeth.

The Velvet Underground: Sweet Jane (1970)

"Sweet Jane" has Velvet Underground versions with minor differences. The first came in 1970 and one with a bridge, which covered the original lyrics originally scrapped in 1969. The song is considered one of the all-time great works in rock history. The Cowboy Junkies recorded the most famous cover while Lou Reed joined Metallica to perform the song at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary show.

Weezer: Undone-The Sweater Song (1994)

Rivers Cuomo admits "Undone" is supposed to be a sad song, but everyone thinks it's funny. Originally, he wanted to write a song that sounds like the Velvet Underground, but instead inadvertently lifted from Metallica's "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)."

Metallica: Fade to Black (1984)

Lars and James were "obsessed with death" at the time they wrote "Fade to Black." It's about suicidal feelings and has become a concert staple. In 1992, Hetfield was severely burned when he stepped into the on-stage flames while performing the song forcing a premature end of Metallica's set. Guns n Roses came on later and Axl melted down leading to a riot in Montreal.

806. Bleeding Me by Metallica (1997)

James Hetfield settled the speculation over the meaning of "Bleeding Me" in a Playboy interview. He claimed it was about bleeding out all the ugly and evil in his life. Prior to his stint in therapy, he planned his life around his hangovers. The song was never officially released as a single.
