Green Day: East Jesus Nowhere (2009)

Billie Joe Armstrong attended a church baptism and was horrified. The end result was "East Jesus Nowhere." To say the song is highly critical of religion would be an understatement. It does represent the rising tide of anger toward all things Christian, which has permeated the American left in recent years. This leads to interesting questions about what constitutes bigotry.

Alice in Chains: Check My Brain (2009)

Alice in Chains never officially broke up. But, Layne Staley’s issues kept the band sidelined from 1996 until his 2002 death. They released their first post-Staley record in 2009 with new lead singer William DuVall.

U2: Breathe (2009)

Edge created the initial treatment for “Breathe” after working with Jack White and Jimmy Page for It Might Get Loud. The song is directly influenced by the pair. Originally, the lyrics referenced Nelson Mandela, but the band developed a second set that was eventually used.

Green Day: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (2009)

Green Day enjoyed success with American Idiot. As a result, they decided to continue with rock operas and released 21st Century Breakdown. The album is broken into three parts. The third act is "Horseshoes and Hand Grenades." The main characters have to deal with the challenges facing America, and Detroit, in the post-911 world. The song merges classic rock, arena rock, and punk.

Muse: Uprising (2009)

"Uprising" spent 17 weeks at #1. The band needs to avoid teddy bears if it wants to establish revolutionary street cred.

Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball is the #1 album this week. The title track is an ode to old Giants Stadium and its memories.

Weezer ft. Lil Wayne: Can't Stop Partying (2009)

"Can't Stop Partying" was a demo in 2008 running 2:19. Rivers Cuomo and Lil Wayne reconstructed the song and Weezer released it on the Raditute album. The song is about partying! The band did not release a video for the song, but there is a fan made video:

909. If You’re Wondering If I Want You To (I Want You To) (2009)

Weezer created a fifties style town known as "Weezerville" to promote 2009's "If You're Wondering if I Want You To (I Want You To)." The video features a fifties vixen (Cloverfield's Odette Yustman) that unintentionally injures the band members through her total disregard for their feelings. It's Pleasantville meets Mommy Dearest meets Chevy Chase's version of Gerald Ford.
