Mahalia Jackson: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1997

In 1927, her family moved from the South to New Orleans as part of the Great Migration.  She began singing in church and eventually began recording in 1931.

She signed with Decca in 1937 and Apollo in 1948.

Frank Sinatra: High Hopes (Kennedy 1960)

FDR had "Happy Days Are Here Again" and JFK followed with a catchy tune of his own. He borrowed Frank Sinatra's talents for "High Hopes" to tap into the optimism and youth of his campaign. JFK won a nail biter over V.P. Richard Nixon.

Dion was one of the most popular performers before the British Invasion.

Dion and the Belmonts played on the Winter Dance Party tour in 1959. Dion could not afford the $36 needed to fly and stuck with the bus. The plane, carrying Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, crashed killing the three.

In 1960, Dion checked into rehab for a heroin addiction. The band split later in the year over financial disagreements.

The British Invasion hit and Dion’s fortunes changed. In 1968, he cleaned up again and changed his style and life.
