Def Leppard: Promises (1999)

Def Leppard scored a top 40 hit and a #1 on the rock charts in 1999 with "Promises." It's one of the few songs of the period to do well on the charts. The band was a monster a decade earlier and "Promises" marked a return to their classic sound after some experimentation.

The Foo Fighters: Learning to Fly (1999)

The Foos released this great song in 1999. The video is amusing as it stars Jack Black and Kyle Gass from Tenacious D as a couple of drug runners disguised as airline mechanics. The passengers all get stoned leaving the band to land the plane. The video pays homage to airline disaster films of the 70s.

Santana ft Rob Thomas: Smooth (1999)

Rob Thomas wrote “Smooth for his wife and includes references to Elton John’s “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” and Ben E. King’s “Spanish Harlem.” Santana provided the guitar riff distinguishing it from other songs. Billboard named it the #1 rock song of the first 50 years of the Hot 100 chart and #22 song overall.

Blondie: Maria (1999)

In 1999, Blondie released their first single in 17 years. "Maria" hit #1 in the UK and peaked at #82 in America. They disbanded in 1982 when doctors diagnosed Chris Stein with pemphigus. He survived and the band reunited. Blondie is the only American act to have #1 hits in the UK in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Kid Rock toiled for a decade before breaking in 1999. After initial failures, he learned to play instruments and expanded his music knowledge. In 1998, he released Devil Without a Cause, which was light years ahead of his previous work. In May 1999, he released Bawitdaba and the rest is history.
