Rush: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2013 part 1

1968-1989

Alex Liefson, Jeff Jones, and John Rutsey formed Rush in 1968. A couple weeks later, Geddy Lee replaced Jones. The band released their debut album in 1974. That year, Rutsey left due to health problems. Neil Peart replaced him to fill out the classic lineup that still exists.

Their first album with Peart took off as a result of rock radio in Cleveland.

Peart wrote the lyrics while Lee and Leifson concentrated on instrumentation. Rush's songs concentrated on fantasy, sci-fi, history, philosophy, and whatever else Peart was reading at the time.

2112 was influenced by Ayn Rand and freaked out leftists.

Genesis formed in 1967 by Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford. Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart rounded out the lineup. They signed a contract in 1968 with Decca and dubbed themselves "Genesis." This caused some confusion as record stores placed their albums with Christian Music as opposed to Prog Rock. By the time they recorded their first album, they switched drummers with John Silver replacing Chris Stewart.

Another drummer change…John Mayhew replaced John Silver. Gabriel tried to attract attention by wearing bizarre costumes during their live performances. His efforts paid off. People noticed.

By this point, they had developed a cult following. Anthony Phillips developed stage fright and left the band. He was replaced by Mick Barnard and then finally Steve Hackett. At the same time, Phil Collins replaced Mayhew on drums.

Steve Hackett pioneered the tapping technique Eddie Van Halen made popular and sweep-picking that became a fad in the 80s.

Peter Gabriel then left the band to embark on a solo career. Phil Collins became the lead singer after Genesis auditioned over 400 singers. This led Chester Thompson to join the live act to handle drum duties to free up Collins.

Queen formed in 1970. Originally, they were influenced by Prog Rock and hard rock. They changed their name from Smile to Queen when Freddie Mercury joined. They released their first album in 1973.

Pink Floyd emerged from the sixties psychedelic scene to become a leading prog rock band. Their music, live shows, and experimentation made them one of the most successful bands in history.

Pink Floyd formed in 1965 and coalesced around Syd Barrett. Over time, Barrett suffered from mental illness and was replaced by David Gilmour.

Barrett visited the band during the recording sessions for Wish You Were Here. No one recognized him at first.

The band recorded one more album with Waters and rebelled. They continued without him and lawsuits followed.

Pink Floyd's third stage came in 1987 under Gilmour's direction.

Pink Floyd stopped recording new material after 1994. The band essentially quit after a lucrative tour.

In 2005, they reunited with Waters at Live 8:

Waters and Gilmour seemed to have buried the hatchet and have performed at charity events together.

Barrett died in 2006.

Richard Wright died in 2008.
