Nickelback was an alt rock act emerging from the ashes of grunge when they released "Leader of Men." Rage Against the Machine: Sleep Now in the Fire (2000)

Rage Against the Machine wrote from an extreme left political standpoint. "Sleep Now in the Fire" attacks greed and the band filmed the video at Wall Street. Michael Moore directed the shoot. The song includes many historical references. During the song, the band criticizes Euro-American policies and actions in Vietnam, World War II, Africa, and the New World.

Sting: Desert Rose (2000)

"Desert Rose" was inspired by the novel, Dune. Sting starred in the 1984 film adaptation and includes arabic and features Cheb Mami. The song later appeared in a Jaguar commercial. In the old days, this would have been considered selling out. In the last decade and a half, it is now viewed as a way to get music to the public.

Stone Temple Pilots: Sour Girl (2000)

The video for "Sour Girl" is just weird. Weiland became a Buffy fan and got Sarah Michelle Gellar to appear in the video, which also featured satanic teletubbies. Very strange!

Pearl Jam: Nothing As It Seems (2000)

Jeff Ament wrote "Nothing As It Seems" about his Montana childhood. It's a highly reflective song which Ament considers a song about "judgement." It's dark, moody, and reminiscent of Pink Floyd. It's the type of song that never enjoys commercial success, but is loved and appreciated by music fans.

Aerosmith: Jaded (2000)

Although released in December 2000, this song reminds me of spring as it was on the radio constantly was the weather warmed. Sony told Aerosmith that if they did not release "Jaded" as a single, they would be dropped from the label. The note continues to provide inspiration to lead singer Steven Tyler. That is when Tyler is not hosting karaoke contests...

U2: In a Little While (2000)

Originally, "In a Little While" was about a love "hangover", but the meaning changed when U2 heard the piece was the last song Joey Ramone listened to on his deathbed. Note Bono's scratchy voice on the vocals. To me, the song signifies the summer of 2000.

A lot of pop culture references in this one. The RHCP reference David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Star Wars, Star Trek, the moon landing conspiracy theory, and Dorothy Stratten. It also examines the dark side of Hollywood with references to porn, fake boobs, plastic surgery, and the self destructive nature of many artists.

Best Line: Destruction leads to a very rough road but it also breeds creation.
