Jeff Beck joined the Rumbles in 1963. He worked as a session guitarist next before being recruited for The Yardbirds.

Afterward, he formed The Jeff Beck Group with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart. They released two albums and split up.

In 1969, he suffered a fractured skull in a car accident. He recovered in 1970.

R.E.M. (1987-1997)

REM broke into the mainstream in 1987.

Stipe worried that their breakthrough single was too mean spirited. At the same time, he wanted to write a song with the word love in it without it being a typical love song.

REM left IRS for Warner Brothers when their contract expired.

They finally toured and recorded as they went along. The music industry, and REM, was at its height. They signed the most lucrative contract in recording history. The music industry would not survive the new millennium.

Touring proved amazingly taxing on REM. Bill Berry suffered from an aneurysm and collapsed on stage. Michael Stipe had emergency hernia surgery. Mike Mills had abdominal surgery. They also fired their manager after a sexual harassment charge. In 1997, Berry decided to retire.  In the wake of Berry's announcement, Stipe compared REM to a three-legged dog.

Led Zeppelin formed out of the Yardbirds’ ashes. In fact, they formed as the “New Yardbirds” in 1968. They helped pioneer the next phase of album oriented rock that dominated the early seventies. Zeppelin began as a blues-oriented rock band and expanded to other forms such as folk and even medieval music. The band explored many themes including mythology and history to go along with the usual rock topics.

The group disbanded following drummer John Bonham’s death in 1980. Band members continued on with other projects. They reunited in 1985 for Live Aid and for Atlantic Records 40^th anniversary in 1988.

892. Beck's Bolero by Jeff Beck (1967)

Jeff Beck gathered his friends Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Nicky Hopkins, and Keith Moon together to record his own bolero. The group considered recording an entire album, but never got around to it.  The song is presented in three parts and contains perhaps the first heavy metal riff. Listen for a scream about halfway through. Moon kicked over his microphone...
