In 1987, Genesis sold out Wembley Stadium four nights in a row. They were at their peak. After a brief hiatus for solo work, they returned in 1991.

In 1996, Phil Collins left Genesis. Touring members Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer also left. Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford decided to carry on. They settled on singer Ray Wilson to replace Collins.

The new Genesis did well in Europe, but fell flat without Collins in America. Banks and Rutherford fired Wilson and Genesis went on hiatus until 2006 when Collins rejoined. Originally, they hoped to reunite with Gabriel and Hackett as well, but plans fell through. Genesis went on tour once more as a three piece.

Since the reunion tour, Genesis has gone into hiatus. There has been speculation about their return ever since with band members vacillating back and forth.

In 2014, Peter Gabriel was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo performer.

Genesis formed in 1967 by Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford. Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart rounded out the lineup. They signed a contract in 1968 with Decca and dubbed themselves "Genesis." This caused some confusion as record stores placed their albums with Christian Music as opposed to Prog Rock. By the time they recorded their first album, they switched drummers with John Silver replacing Chris Stewart.

Another drummer change…John Mayhew replaced John Silver. Gabriel tried to attract attention by wearing bizarre costumes during their live performances. His efforts paid off. People noticed.

By this point, they had developed a cult following. Anthony Phillips developed stage fright and left the band. He was replaced by Mick Barnard and then finally Steve Hackett. At the same time, Phil Collins replaced Mayhew on drums.

Steve Hackett pioneered the tapping technique Eddie Van Halen made popular and sweep-picking that became a fad in the 80s.

Peter Gabriel then left the band to embark on a solo career. Phil Collins became the lead singer after Genesis auditioned over 400 singers. This led Chester Thompson to join the live act to handle drum duties to free up Collins.

Van Halen formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. Eddie Van Halen played guitar, Alex Van Halen was on drums, and Mark Stone was the bassist. Eddie did the vocals for a time. David Lee Roth joined the band so they could save money by using his sound system. In 1974, Michael Anthony replaced Stone on bass and they changed their name from Geneisys because it was already in use by Peter Gabriel and the guys from Genesis. Gene Simmons of KISS discovered the band leading to a record contract in 1977. They released their debut album in 1978 and changed rock. Eddie Van Halen's guitar style was revolutionary and led to a million imitators. Van Halen was self-taught and his picking style was the dominant paradigm in guitar rock for 20 years.

Roth hated the keyboards and fought with Eddie over the band's direction. On top of this, personality conflicts ripped the band apart. Roth went solo in 1985 and Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen as the new lead singer.

843. Digging in the Dirt by Peter Gabriel (1992)

Peter Gabriel was a music video pioneer with "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time" changing the game. In 1992, he continued with his animated musical featurettes. However, "Digging in the Dirt" was darker and more ominous than his prior ventures.
