U2: Vertigo (2004)

The Edge described "Vertigo" as "the mother of all rock tunes." Bono opens with "Uno, dos, tres, catorce!" which Bruce Springsteen proclaimed "rock n roll." In English, it means "one, two, three, fourteen!" Bono claimed alcohol might have been involved at that point in the writing process.

U2: Original of the Species (2004)

Bono declared “Original of the Species” the best song on How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.  He dedicated it to his daughters and the song does sound like it was written by a father to his children. Additionally, he admitted the song was heavily influenced by John Lennon.

Green Day: Homecoming (2004)

Green Day took inspiration from The Who and created their own rock opera.  American Idiot climaxes with “Homecoming.” The record follows the adventures of Jesus of Suburbia, who transforms at the end of the story. A part of the main character dies at the end and loses touch with whatshername. The journey's end is something we can all identify with.

R.E.M.: Leaving New York (2004)

Michael Stipe wanted to write a "love song" for New York City. He considers NYC his second home and wrote the song after viewing the city from a plane. The song hit #5 in Britain, but failed to chart in America. It was the first lead single off a R.E.M. studio album to fail to chart since 1985.

885. American Idiot by Green Day (2004)

Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong heard Lynyrd Skynyrd's "That's How I Like It" on the radio and was horrified. How could anyone be proud of being a redneck? So, Armstrong weaved a story about "Jesus of Suburbia" into an entire album. "American Idiot" attacks the American government and propaganda. The song accuses citizens of being mind-numbed robots doing as they're told and consuming all they are spoon-fed by the government and media. Of course, a comparable and perhaps more compelling argument could be made about those that share Armstrong's point of view!
