Booker T. Jones left Stax before “Melting Pot” and the band retired the name. Although reunions occurred from time to time.

In 1975, drummer Al Jackson was murdered in his home. The three surviving members reunited in 1977 and Booker T and the M.G.’s were back.

They opened for the Clash in 1979-80. They also opened for Sha Na Na in 1980.

The pair later split for good and did not speak for 13 years.

In 1988, Dave Prater died in a car accident.

Sam & Dave: Hold On, I'm Coming (1966)

Isaac Hayes and David Porter came up with the title as Hayes was tring to get Porter out of the bathroom. With a title in hand, they went on to write the Sam & Dave classic. Booker T. & the M.G.'s provided the instrumentation making this quite a superstar collaboration.
