“Money for
Nothing” is an iconic song from 1985. It contains a classic guitar riff, the
line “I want my MTV”, and backing vocals from Sting. Mark Knopfler overheard some guys in a store
complaining about rock musicians not actually working and wrote the song from
that perspective. In fact, Knopfler used some of the real words from the
appliance store worker. Dire Straits was criticized for homophobic lyrics, but
they were just parroting the blue collar worker. It continued to stir
controversy as late as 2011, when people were much more lame. The video employed groundbreaking computer
effects and is considered one of the great productions of all time.

Chet Atkins: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2002

Atkins
created the Nashville Sound, influenced a number of guitarists, and produced
records for a number of renowned country and rock artists including Elvis
Presley, Jerry Reed, and Dolly Parton.
He dropped
out of high school and worked at a radio station. He made his first Grand Ole
Opry appearance in 1946. Atkins signed with RCA and worked with June Carter and
the Carter Sisters.

James Taylor: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2000
In 1966, he
spent 9 months in McLean Hospital suffering from depression. Taylor later
admitted the experience was a “life saver.” He checked himself out and moved to
New York to start a band. Unfortunately, he began using heroin. The experience proved an education in music
and drugs. He struggled with drugs and decided to go solo.
In 1969, he
signed with Warner Brothers.
His
breakthrough:
In 1971, he
earned a cover story in Time Magazine.
In 1977, he
signed with Columbia Records.
Taylor
encountered Mark David Chapman, "The guy had sort of pinned me to the wall
and was glistening with maniacal sweat and talking some freak speak about what
he was going to do and his stuff with how John was interested, and he was going
to get in touch with John Lennon. And it was surreal to actually have contact
with the guy 24 hours before he shot John."
