1957 in music

Elvis Presley had another monster year. He scored three #1 hits, bought Graceland, and made his last Ed Sullivan appearance. At the same time, Jerry Lee Lewis released two songs that made him immortal. At the same time, Ricky Nelson, Bo Diddley, and the Everly Brothers record iconic tracks. Meanwhile, John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the first time and Simon and Garfunkel unite as Tom and Jerry.

The Dave Clark 5: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2008

The Dave Clark Quintet began in 1957. They changed their name to the Dave Clark Five (DC5) in 1962. They were the second British Invasion group to appear on Ed Sullivan after the Beatles. The DC5 charted 17 times in the Top 40.

The hits began to dry up after 1967 because they did not change with the times. The DC5 broke up in 1970. Much of their catalogue remained unavailable between 1975 and 1993 because of a licensing issue. Rumors swirled that Jan Wenner blocked the DC5's induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in favor of Grandmaster Flash. The band finally made the Hall in 2008.

1956 in music

The first rock era began in earnest in 1955. The genre exploded dramatically the following year as Elvis Presley became the biggest artist since Frank Sinatra. Elvis was omnipresent in 1956. His talent, youth, and good looks helped expand rock’s appeal to America’s teens. Presley had four #1 singles that year and three of 1956’s top 5 hits. His appearance on Ed Sullivan was a key milestone for that generation.

Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met by chance at Venice Beach. The two joined forces and formed the Doors. By 1966, they were playing the Whisky a Go Go leading to an album deal.

The band’s breakout hit was written by Robbie Krieger. When they played it on Ed Sullivan, the show asked the Doors to change the lyrics. They refused. After being banned from Sullivan, Morrison said, "Hey man. We just did the Sullivan Show."
