John Mellencamp: Lonely Ol Night (1985)

The song was inspired by Hud starring Paul Newman. The strained relationship between father and son informed many of the lyrics. The song emotes loneliness especially for a mid-80s teen.

John Mellencamp: Hurts So Good (1982)

John Mellencamp, then known as John Cougar, scored three monster hits off his American Fool album. "Hurts So Good" reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of '82 and #1 on the rock charts.

John Mellencamp: Rain on the Scarecrow (1987)

John Mellencamp wanted to shed light on the plight of American farmers. "Rain on the Scarecrow" recounts the trials and troubles of farmers in the modern era. Decreased profits, foreclosures, and empty farmhouses riddle the country. Mellencamp took his efforts a step further when he helped found the Farm Aid charity. The song reached #21 on the charts. Something like this probably would not sniff the Hot 100 today.

John Mellencamp: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2008 part 1

1976-1989

John Mellencamp was born with spina bifida and should have died. However, a doctor performed experimental surgery saving the infant's life. He married at 18, graduated college in 1974, and played music. A record agent convinced him to change his name to John Cougar for marketing purposes and he released his first album in 1976. It flopped. He released a second album overseas and scored a hit in Australia.

I Need a Lover (1978): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adMXjSithMs

John Mellencamp: Paper in Fire (1987)

“Paper in Fire” was Mellencamp’s lead single off The Lonesome Jubilee album. The album spawned a number of hit songs and was influenced by Mellencamp’s uncle’s death.  The album seemed more personal and influenced by folk music as opposed to his earlier efforts.

859. Human Wheels by John Mellencamp (1993)

In 1993, John Mellencamp released some of his strongest work. Influenced in part by the death of a band member, "Human Wheels" was a decidedly human record. Interestingly, Mellencamp's inspiration came from young R&B artists at the time. Here is the title track:

913. Authority Song by John Mellencamp (1984)

Inspired by Bobby Fuller's "I Fought the Law," Mellencamp espouses his own version of rebellion. It's classic Mellencamp in its uncompromising nature. The video expands this character trait with Mellencamp in a boxing ring. The song hit #15 in 1984.
