Don Kirshner produced ABC's In Concert series for nearly a year. In September 1973, he launched Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. The series lasted eight years. The show featured live vocals as opposed to lip synching. This set the show apart from others.

KISS: Psycho Circus (1998)

The four original members of KISS reunited in full makeup for 1998's Psycho Circus. The song sounds like it belongs in a Batman film. Imagine Batman fighting a crazed circus act or all the villains of Gotham loose at once. "Psycho Circus" became KISS' first #1 hit on the Mainstream rock charts in the band's long history.

KISS: Heaven's on Fire (1984)

"Heaven's on Fire" is one of the few songs from the non-makeup era that KISS still performs live. The song is filled with typical KISS musical themes (fans know!). The song hit #11 on the American rock charts and the video received MTV airplay, when MTV played videos. The video included Mark St. John's official debut. He would soon leave the band with Reiter's Syndrome. Bruce Kulick replaced him shortly thereafter.

Van Halen formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. Eddie Van Halen played guitar, Alex Van Halen was on drums, and Mark Stone was the bassist. Eddie did the vocals for a time. David Lee Roth joined the band so they could save money by using his sound system. In 1974, Michael Anthony replaced Stone on bass and they changed their name from Geneisys because it was already in use by Peter Gabriel and the guys from Genesis. Gene Simmons of KISS discovered the band leading to a record contract in 1977. They released their debut album in 1978 and changed rock. Eddie Van Halen's guitar style was revolutionary and led to a million imitators. Van Halen was self-taught and his picking style was the dominant paradigm in guitar rock for 20 years.

Roth hated the keyboards and fought with Eddie over the band's direction. On top of this, personality conflicts ripped the band apart. Roth went solo in 1985 and Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen as the new lead singer.

Stone Temple Pilots: Sex Type Thing (1992)

The Stone Temple Pilots incorporated KISS’ “War Machine” and Led Zeppelin’s “In the Light” together to create an anti-rape song. Despite the song title and full blown testosterone, Weiland says the song is based on a real life incident in which a girl he dated was raped by three men after a party. The song created controversy for a time. Critics misunderstood the lyrics as misogynist leading to some protests.

840. Lick It Up by Kiss (1983)

Kiss scrapped their makeup and appeared in public without it for the first time since their early days. They premiered their new look on a half hour MTV special which also debuted their video for "Lick It Up." (Note for younger readers: MTV used to play music). Despite heavy promotion, the song stalled on the charts.

943. Unholy by Kiss (1992)

The album Revenge was a return to a loud, hard sound from KISS. "Unholy" was edgier and less commercial than their recent endeavours which included "God Gave Rock n Roll To You." It was also the first KISS single with Gene Simmons as lead vocalist in a decade.
