The Clash: Rock the Casbah (1982)

"Rock the Casbah" became The Clash's biggest hit. It begins with some Arab king banning rock music. In response, the people "rock the Casbah" which results in an airstrike. However, the pilots don't obey orders and rock out themselves. The song incorporates Arabic, Hebrew, and Sanscrit words in a clever way.

The Clique recorded "Superman" in 1969. The song became famous when R.E.M. covered it in 1986. Mike Mills provided the lead vocals since Michael Stipe was not enthusiastic about covering the song.

Coldplay: Lovers in Japan (2008)

Coldplay emerged as one of the bright spots in music's dark age of the late 2000s. They were one of the few acts that understood song construction. "Lovers in Japan" is a fun up tempo pop/rock tune. Music post 2010 has improved somewhat from those dark days.

INXS: The One Thing (1982)

"The One Thing" is the perfect example of a post-disco, post-punk rock song. It bridges the gap between the late 70s and mid-80s better than most other recordings of the period. It's also a fun song.

The Pretenders: Middle of the Road (1983)

"Middle of the Road" refers to eastern philosophy and the middle way. At the same time, it compares the difference between being rich and poor as experienced by Chrissy Hynde as a rock star. The song is as close to the perfect rock song as there is.
