The Doors: Back Door Man (1967)

A "back door man" is someone having an affair with a married woman. When the husband leaves, the other guy comes in the back door. The term dates to the 1920s. In the 60s, people began using to term to refer to "anal intercourse." Howlin' Wolf recorded the original in 1960. The Doors covered it seven years later and became a song that defined Jim Morrison, but also the sexual revolution.

Led Zeppelin: Kashmir (1975)

Zeppelin began writing "Kashmir" in 1973 and finally recorded it the following year. The band considered the song one of their greatest musical achievements. Robert Plant was traveling through Southern Morocco when the lyrics came to him. The song is complex creating special challenges for the lyricist:

"Because of the time signature, the whole deal of the song is… not grandiose, but powerful: it required some kind of epithet, or abstract lyrical setting about the whole idea of life being an adventure and being a series of illuminated moments. But everything is not what you see. It was quite a task, ’cause I couldn’t sing it. It was like the song was bigger than me. It’s true: I was petrified, it’s true. It was painful; I was virtually in tears."

Katy Perry: Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)

Katy Perry has tied Michael Jackson for the most #1 hits of a single record with 5. Her latest, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), just hit the top of the charts. Perry's Teenage Dream matched Michael Jackson's Bad (not Thriller) as the album with most #1s. She can't sing and her songs are bad, but people like her!

Blue Oyster Cult: (Don't Fear) The Reaper (1976)

Jimi Hendrix: Crosstown Traffic (1968)

Jimi can't get rid of this girl. She doesn't understand and getting through to her is liking driving through crosstown traffic. The song is filled with innuendo....if you pay attention. It is one of the few tunes to include a kazoo. Hendrix transforms a comb and cellophane into an instrument ala Snoopy. How many songs use a kazoo? Dave Mason from Traffic supplies backing vocals.

Ted Nugent: Little Miss Dangerous (1986)

"Little Miss Dangerous" is about Ted Nugent's girlfriend of the time. In 1978, he began the relationship with the then seventeen-year-old Pela Massa. Nugent convinced her parents to sign documents making him legal guardian. He really was her daddy! On a side note, "Little Miss Dangerous", the song not Pela, appeared in an episode of Miami Vice. Nugent also made an appearance on the show, starring as a drug dealer who died in a shootout at the end.

John Lennon: Stand By Me (1975)

John Lennon recorded a compilation of late 50s and early 60s-era songs that he liked and placed them on his Rock n Roll album. He included a great version of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" on the record. The song was his last major hit before going into retirement for five years reaching the Top 20 in America and Canada. Lennon's son, Julian, also recorded a version.

The Rolling Stones: Plundered My Soul (2010)

"Plundered My Soul" dates to the Rolling Stones' Exile on Mainstreet days. When the band re-released the album in 2010, they included the song as a bonus track. Mick Taylor returned to work with Mick Jagger on the tune. The song was a minor hit for the band. Perhaps more importantly, it serves as a tie to rock's strongest era.

Foo Fighters: Big Me (1996)

The video for "Big Me" parodies the old Mentos commercials. In response, fans tossed Mentos at the band when they played the song live. As a result, the song is a piece of 90s culture. The Foos eventually dusted it off in 2005 and began playing it again.

Weezer: El Scorcho (1996)

"El Scorcho" served as the lead single off Weezer's Pinkerton album. The song seemed to ramble and confused listeners leading to the album tanking commercially. Quite frankly, "El Scorcho" sounds like a bunch of drunks singing around a campfire. However, the song and album are more highly regarded today than in 1996.

In 1983, Secretary of the Interior James Watt banned Independence Day concerts because rock bands "brought out the wrong element." The Beach Boys responded by reminding people the Soviets invited them to perform in 1978. Vice President George Bush defended the concerts and the Beach Boys. When Watt discovered President Reagan liked the band, he backed down.
