Dio: Rainbow in the Dark (1983)

Dio thought the demo for "Rainbow in the Dark" sounded too pop and almost destroyed the tape. His band talked him out of it and the song became one of his signatures. "Rainbow in the Dark" is about Dio's feelings after leaving Black Sabbath. He is the "Rainbow", which was also a band he fronted for a time.

Heart: These Dreams (1986)

Heart really did not do pop ballads before "These Dreams". The song also featured Nancy Wilson on vocals as opposed to Ann. Stevie Nicks turned down the song, which went to #1 in 1986. Reminds me of junior high....probably not a good thing there!

Guns n Roses: It's So Easy (1987)

Duff McKagan wrote "It's So Easy" when the band had little money, but a lot groupies. So, the band lived off the groupies and hangers on. Slash changed the song from a hippie ode to a hard rocker. The song helped define GnR when they broke back in '87.

Motorhead: Ace of Spades (1980)

"Ace of Spades" helped define Motorhead. In popular culture, the term refers to death. During the Iraq War, Saddam Hussein was the Ace of Spades when the U.S. published cards with his face on it. Meanwhile, Motorhead chugs along. The band helped redefine and reinvigorate heavy metal in the late 70s and early 80s. They pioneered thrash and speed metal as well.

Stone Temple Pilots: Sour Girl (2000)

The video for "Sour Girl" is just weird. Weiland became a Buffy fan and got Sarah Michelle Gellar to appear in the video, which also featured satanic teletubbies. Very strange!
