Otis began in swing orchestras and started his own band in 1945.

His band toured with The Robins (who became the Coasters) and had hits into the 50s.

He switched labels in 1951 and struggled on the charts. However, he discovered Etta James, co-wrote “Hound Dog”, and produced.

In 1955, he started his own label. In 1957, he scored his signature hit, and last major success.

In 1969, he recorded an album of pornographic material under an assumed name. From the 60s until 2006, he remained active in journalism, politics, music, religion, business and radio.

Johnny Otis died in 2012.
