Johnny Horton: The Battle of New Orleans (1959)

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsRK3DNoa_Q

Andy Jackson beat the Brits at New Orleans in 1815. Technically, the war had ended, but no one knew. So, Jackson defended New Orleans with a motley crew that included pirates, Native Americans, blacks, militia, and regular army. He defeated the Brits in one of the most smashing victories in U.S. history.

Leo Reisman: Happy Days Are Here Again (1929)

It’s ironic that “Happy Days Are Here Again” was recorded one month after the 1929 stock market crash. The song appeared in the 1930 film, Chasing Rainbows, but is best known as Franklin Roosevelt’s 1932 campaign theme song.

1944 in Music: Bing Crosby's Year

World War II continued to wage into its fifth year. By the end of the year, Hitler’s defeat was just about ensured. While the Third Reich burned, Glenn Miller disappeared over the English Channel and the Metropolitan Opera House opened in New York. Bing Crosby dominated the charts in 1944 in the same way the Beatles did twenty years later.

Here are some offerings from 1944:

Midnight Oil: Beds Are Burning (1987)

"Beds Are Burning" is considered one of music's most important songs. It deals turning indigeonous lands back to Australian native peoples. In particular, many were moved in the 1950s and 60s to the Papunya Settlement. Midnight Oil argues that the government should return the land to its people.

I always thought it was about Euro colonialism.

Bruce Springsteen: Spirit in the Night (1973)

Sometimes, you just need old school Bruce. By the way, Greasy Lake is a composite of two real locations; Lake Carasaljo and a swamp near Garden State Parkway.

Muse: Uprising (2009)

"Uprising" spent 17 weeks at #1. The band needs to avoid teddy bears if it wants to establish revolutionary street cred.

Sting: Desert Rose (2000)

"Desert Rose" was inspired by the novel, Dune. Sting starred in the 1984 film adaptation and includes arabic and features Cheb Mami. The song later appeared in a Jaguar commercial. In the old days, this would have been considered selling out. In the last decade and a half, it is now viewed as a way to get music to the public.

Randy Edelman: Gettysburg theme (1993)

Loved this movie and its great soundtrack. The movie makes you think "what if?"  What if Lee listened to Longstreet? What if Stonewall survived Chancellorsville?
