Little Walter: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2008

Little Walter is the only person inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as a harmonica player. He learned to play at a young age and quit school at 12. He made his way to Chicago and earned a name for himself as a harmonica player by age 15. Little Walters’ first recordings were released in 1947. He joined Muddy Waters’ band the following year.

Country Boy by Muddy Waters (1951): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU8B0Ai4mvY

He became a band leader in 1952 and scored several hits over the next six years.

The only #1 instrumental that was primarily harmonica.

In 1968, he died from minor wounds received in a fight. However, they compounded injuries from other fights and led to coronary thrombosis.

Foo Fighters: This is a Call (1995)

The Foo Fighters’ first major release came after Dave Grohl returned from his honeymoon in Ireland. It was a hectic period in Grohl’s life. Nirvana disbanded following Kurt Cobain’s suicide and then he got married. He returned and recorded the first Foo Fighters album in five days.

Def Leppard: Promises (1999)

Def Leppard scored a top 40 hit and a #1 on the rock charts in 1999 with "Promises." It's one of the few songs of the period to do well on the charts. The band was a monster a decade earlier and "Promises" marked a return to their classic sound after some experimentation.

Oasis: Supersonic (1994)

"Supersonic" did not do that well at first, but sales eventually picked up. It now appears on lists of great guitar tracks.  The band denies the guitar solo was a deliberate copy of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." However, they have been known to allow their influences show...

David Gilmour: Take a Breath (2006)

"Take a Breath" is one of the few songs on Gilmour's On an Island release that sounds like Pink Floyd. It was his first solo record in 22 years. The lead track earned a Grammy nod for best instrumental. The album itself sounded extremely personal with some nods to his past like "Take a Breath."

Smashing Pumpkins: Today (1993)

The Smashing Pumpkins were in a very dark place. Drugs, writer’s bloc, romantic difficulties, and the pressure to live up to their hype led Billy Corgan into darkness. The song is about suicidal thoughts, but the upbeat musical accompaniment overtakes the lyrical themes. There is a reference to self-mutilation, but who notices because Today is the greatest.

1956 in music

The first rock era began in earnest in 1955. The genre exploded dramatically the following year as Elvis Presley became the biggest artist since Frank Sinatra. Elvis was omnipresent in 1956. His talent, youth, and good looks helped expand rock’s appeal to America’s teens. Presley had four #1 singles that year and three of 1956’s top 5 hits. His appearance on Ed Sullivan was a key milestone for that generation.

#1 song of the year:

Que Sera Sera by Doris Day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZbKHDPPrrc

U2: Ordinary Love (2013)

U2 wrote “Ordinary Love” to honor Nelson Mandela and is featured in the bio pic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The song was personal to the band. They had been Mandela supporters since the late 70s and played anti-apartheid events since that period. In many respects, “Ordinary Love” is a song about a dream that came true.
