1959 in Music

People believed rock n roll died in 1959. Indeed, the year marked the end of the first generation of rockers. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper died in a plane crash. Holly's death dealt a significant blow to the genre. By this point, Jerry Lee Lewis fell due to personal scandal, Little Richard quit performing in favor of the ministry, and Elvis Presley was drafted. Despite this, rock's so-called last gasp produced iconic works such as "La Bamba", "What I'd Say", and "There Goes My Baby." Rock n Roll gives way to the Dance Craze, teen idols, and Folk revival. Meanwhile, The Supremes form and Jimi Hendrix buys his first guitar. The year's biggest star was Bobby Darin.

Sammy Hagar: Eagles Fly (1987)

Sammy Hagar owed his label an album. So he recorded I Never Said Goodbye with help from his Van Halen bandmates. The album featured "Give to Live", "Boys Night Out", and "Eagles Fly." The song reached #82 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #22 on the rock charts. Hagar would not release another solo album until 1997.

Bryan Adams: Cuts Like a Knife (1983)

"Cuts Like a Knife" helped break Bryan Adams into the mainstream. It was one of the summer soundtrack songs of 1983. It reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 in Adams' native Canada. The Canadian remained a force in music for the next decade and continues to record.

Pete Townshend: Let My Love Open the Door (1980)

This is Pete Townshend's only Top 10 hit in America as a solo artist. The song has appeared in numerous ads and film ranging from Look Who's Talking to Jersey Girl to Evan Almighty. It also appeared in Californication. It will most likely continue to be used in film, television, and commercials for years to come. It's too bouncy and happy! I wonder if this might be the most used song...

Pete Townshend: Rough Boys (1980)

Was Pete coming out? Or was he discussing his ambiguous sexuality? Or was he talking about people he knew? Pete has given contradictory statements on the song and the issue. It continues to confuse people to this day.

Blondie: The Tide Is High (1980)

Blondie is one of the most eclectic groups in music history. They began as a punk band, but evolved to include everything around them. In this case, they throw some reggae into the mix. The video had a figure that looks remarkably like Darth Vader.

Foil by Weird Al Yankovic (2014)

Weird Al demonstrates why he is the best at music parody. He has outlasted most of the acts he has mocked over the years. Here, Al gives his take on "Royal" by Lourde. It begins as an ode to aluminum foil and then jumps into paranoid conspiracies.

1969-1979
Alice Cooper is the Godfather of Shock Rock. He brought theater and spectacle to rock by combining horror and vaudeville to garage rock.

Alice Cooper is actually the name of the band, but later became associated with its lead singer Vincent Furnier. Supposedly, they used a Quija board to come up with the name. They really knew how to connect with fans and young people.
