In 2001, Jason Newsted left Metallica. He was replaced with Robert Trujillo. The Newsted departure and other internal problems appeared in the documentary Some Kind of Monster.
It appeared Metallica might fold, but they released their eighth album in 2003. St Anger hit #1 on the Billboard charts.
