Sly received massive pressure to segregate his band from radicals that did not like whites. The pressures of the industry and from these groups was too much and drug abuse followed.

By the mid-70s, band members, including Sly, began missing gigs because of drug abuse. At one infamous show, the band failed to draw and had to scrape together the funds to make it home. Sly went onto a solo career.

Sly disappeared from sight to clean up in 1984. In 2011, he released his first new album in nearly 30 years.
