Coldplay
adapted Kraftwerk’s “Computer Love” for their own and created “Talk.” The band
had worked and reworked the song before scrapping it for the Kraftwerk inspired
motif. The video is a nod to old fashioned sci-fi movies complete with a giant
robot.

Green Day: Homecoming (2004)
Green Day
took inspiration from The Who and created their own rock opera. American
Idiot climaxes with “Homecoming.” The record follows the adventures of
Jesus of Suburbia, who transforms at the end of the story. A part of the main
character dies at the end and loses touch with whatshername. The journey's end is something we can all identify with.

U2: Breathe (2009)
Edge
created the initial treatment for “Breathe” after working with Jack White and
Jimmy Page for It Might Get Loud. The
song is directly influenced by the pair. Originally, the lyrics referenced
Nelson Mandela, but the band developed a second set that was eventually used.

Pearl Jam: I Got Id (Shit) (1995)
The lyrics
cry “I got shit” which made people wonder if the band changed the song’s name
to placate the record company. The concept of Id comes from Freud. Neil Young
makes a guest appearance on guitar. This is classic mid-90s rock. It also makes a great post break-up song to
compliment “Black.”

John Mellencamp: Paper in Fire (1987)
“Paper in
Fire” was Mellencamp’s lead single off The
Lonesome Jubilee album. The album spawned a number of hit songs and was
influenced by Mellencamp’s uncle’s death.
The album seemed more personal and influenced by folk music as opposed
to his earlier efforts.
