The Ramones
experienced minimal commercial success, but nonetheless became a major
influence for subsequent acts. Spin Magazine listed them as the #2 rock act of
all time in 2002. The band members
played under the pseudonym “Ramone” and remained together until the mid-90s.
Three founding members, Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee have died.
The Ramones
formed and played together for the first time live in 1974. They quickly
developed a following and became regulars at CBGBs in New York. They recorded
their first album in 1976.
Their
popularity influenced a number of punk bands and led to many being signed.
They made
their film debut in 1979’s Rock n Roll
High School.
The mid-80s
saw the band shuffle members.
After
appearing on the Lollapalooza tour, they announced a farewell tour. The original lineup appeared for an autograph
signing at the Virgin Superstore in 1999.
