Metallica: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2009 part 3

2001-present

In 2001, Jason Newsted left Metallica. He was replaced with Robert Trujillo. The Newsted departure and other internal problems appeared in the documentary Some Kind of Monster.

It appeared Metallica might fold, but they released their eighth album in 2003. St Anger hit #1 on the Billboard charts.

They played with Lou Reed at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame concert and decided to record with him. There was an unnecessary major backlash from fans.

Metallica: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame part 2

1991-2000

Metallica broke into popular music consciousness in 1989 with "One." In 1991, they became superstars with their self-titled "Black" album. Naturally, they were accused of selling out.

Digital downloads spelled the beginning of the end of the music industry. The battle cost the band some fans. However, they were right in the long run.

Metallica: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2009 part 1

1981-1990

Lars Ulrich formed Metallica in 1981. James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner answered Lars' ad and Metallica formed. Dave Mustaine joined shortly thereafter. They released a song on the now legendary Metal Massacre I album. The song created buzz, they did a demo, and they were on the way. Tanner would be gone long before Metallica hit the big time. Cliff Burton joined the band in 1982.The following year, they released their first album. However, they kicked Mustaine out of the band for drug abuse and hired Kirk Hammett. Mustaine later formed Megadeth.

In a bizarre moment, Metallica lost the Best Metal Performance Grammy to Jethro Tull. Too be continued...

Run DMC: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2009

Run DMC was a hip hop trio from Queens, New York. They are the greatest, most influential rap/hip hop acts in history. Joseph "Run" Simmons, Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell, and Darryl (DMC) McDaniels grew up in Hollis, Queens. The act signed with Profile Records and released their first single in 1983.

It's Like That (1983): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hN1SKVx31s

They quickly ascended the Hip Hop echelon and whisked away the Old School Hip Hip artists.

My Adidas (1986): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA8DsUN6g_k

Then, they broke into the mainstream. Their cover of "Walk this Way" was a pivotal moment in music history.

The Offspring: Gone Away (1997)

"Gone Away" is another song suitable for Batman. Imagine Bruce Wayne at his parent's gravesite. The song was written after lead singer Dexter Holland's girlfriend died in a car accident. The somber nature of the song was a departure for a band noted for its offbeat music.

The Gin Blossoms: Til I Hear It From You (1995)

The Gin Blossoms wrote this song during the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. One critic called it the perfect pop song, or at least the closest thing to a perfect pop tune. The Gin Blossoms experienced great success in the mid-90s before breaking up in 1997. They reunited in 2002, but have yet to regain the level of popularity achieved 20 years ago.

KISS: Psycho Circus (1998)

The four original members of KISS reunited in full makeup for 1998's Psycho Circus. The song sounds like it belongs in a Batman film. Imagine Batman fighting a crazed circus act or all the villains of Gotham loose at once. "Psycho Circus" became KISS' first #1 hit on the Mainstream rock charts in the band's long history.

U2: Dirty Day (1993)

Bono lifted several of his dad's favorite phrases to craft "Dirty Day." The song is about a man that leaves his family only to return many years later. The character meets his abandoned son. The music is very dark and captures the mood of the rock scene of the time.

The Velvet Underground: Sweet Jane (1970)

"Sweet Jane" has Velvet Underground versions with minor differences. The first came in 1970 and one with a bridge, which covered the original lyrics originally scrapped in 1969. The song is considered one of the all-time great works in rock history. The Cowboy Junkies recorded the most famous cover while Lou Reed joined Metallica to perform the song at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary show.
