1991-2000

Metallica broke into popular music consciousness in 1989 with "One." In 1991, they became superstars with their self-titled "Black" album. Naturally, they were accused of selling out.

In 1992, they co-headlined a tour with Guns n Roses. Hetfield suffered major burns during an on stage incident. Later in the same show, Axl Rose threw a fit, the show ended early, and a riot ensued.

In 2000, the band discovered one of their demos had been leaked online. They discovered online file sharing and filed suit against Napster for copyright infringement. Digital downloads spelled the beginning of the end of the music industry. The battle cost the band some fans. However, they were right in the long run.
