Andy Williams: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (1963)

For whatever reason, I always thought Johnny Mathis did the original. The song always confused me somewhat...why would people tell "scary ghost stories" for Christmas and what sort of glories occurred during "Christmases of long long ago"? Maybe Charlemagne's coronation in 800...

Def Leppard: White Lightning (1992)

Def Leppard suffered through many hardships in the 1980s. After the success of Hysteria, the worst appeared behind them. In 1991, guitarist Steve Clark died from a combination of alcohol, painkillers, and anti-depressants. The band claimed he literally died in the gutter. In response, they recorded "White Lightning" chronically his struggles. They featured the song on the Adrenalize album, which is probably the last major hit record for the pop metal genre.

Queen: We Will Rock You (1977)

Brian May wrote "We Will Rock You" in response to an overwhelmingly emotional response from an audience following a show at Bingley Hall in Stafford. The song is essentially a cappella with the exception of May's brief guitar blurb. Other than that, the only accompanyment is some stomping and clapping. "We Will Rock You" has since emerged as the preeminent stadium rock song.

R.E.M.: Radio Free Europe (1981)

"Radio Free Europe" created "college" and "alternative" music. According to the Library of Congress, it set "the pattern for later indie rock releases by breaking through on college radio in the face of mainstream radio's general indifference." The song was originally released in 1981, but was re-recorded for their first album, Murmur in 1983. A decade later, the band's "Losing My Religion" made alternative the most popular music genre in the country.

Bob Marley: Redemption Song (1980)

"Redemption Song" borrows from Marcus Garvey's pan-Africanist movement from the 1920s. At the same time, it immortalizes Marley's own inner feelings as he is battling cancer. As a result, it documents not only Marley's political beliefs, but his pain, sorrow, and concerns over his own mortality.

The Beach Boys: God Only Knows (1966)

Brian Wilson moved The Beach Boys away from their surf sound and into a more sophisticated realm with the Pet Sounds album. He experimented with a variety of different sounds and instruments and attempted more ambitious melodies and vocal harmonies. "God Only Knows" was one of the first pop songs to include the word "God" in its title further expanding the group's horizons. The song is probably best known to modern audiences as the theme song to Big Love.

The Year in Music: 1939

The Great Depression began its second decade while World War II broke out in Europe. The music of 1939 reflects the hopes for a better time as well as patriotism. Big band music evolved from swing and dominated the musical landscape beginning in 1935.

The following is a sample of what was popular in 1939:

The #1 song of 1939 was Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow."

Coldplay: Clocks (2002)

"Clocks" is one of the few iconic songs to come out of the 2000s. It's a piano driven song with minimalist accompanyment. The main theme seems to be the obsession over time as well as a sense of urgency. On a totally unrelated note, the Detroit Tigers play "Clocks" after a loss.

Frank Sinatra: Strangers in the Night (1966)

Frank Sinatra hated "Strangers in the Night" and called it "a piece of shit." Well, it went to #1. Sometimes there is a disconnect between what artists think and what fans like. The song is famous for Sinatra's improved "doo-be-doo-be-doo" which later inspired Scooby Doo.
