The Dells
formed in 1952 as the El-Rays. They changed their name three years later and
signed with Vee-Jay Records.

In 1958, a
car accident left Mickey McGill hospitalized. The group disbanded for two
years.
They did
not begin to experience major success until the mid-60s.
They
consulted on The Five Heartbeats,
which was loosely based on their career.
